Ulviye’s Dream is my new project, a series of photographs inspired by the women of the Turkish War of Independence and of the Early Turkish Republic; the women who left an impression but who have never been remembered and revered enough.

Ulviye Mevlan was a significant figure in the Ottoman Women’s Movement.  She was the editor-in-chief of the magazine “Kadınlar Dünyası” (“Women’s World”), one of the first women’s magazines. She helped founding many girls’ schools and tailoring workshops for women to work. The name “Ulviye” means, “high, exalted”.

This series of photographs aims to recreate the historical ambiance, however with the women in a modernised appearance and fashion. This look will include impressions from the 1910’s, 1920’s and 1930’s. The project thus will create a connection between the past and the future, reminding the Turkish woman of both her past and her future, inspiring and empowering her.

Creative and artistic projects on women are very few in Turkey, and I especially wanted to work on such a project so as to cause “a positive effect” now, in a period where violence against women has escalated and women’s rights were subject to a regression. The Turkish woman, contrary to the “weak woman” portrayed in media, is in fact a smart, empowered and brave woman who broke down a tradition 100 years ago. The Turkish woman of the present must learn or remember her true past, question her today as “Reactionism in Turkey always starts by attacking women’s freedom”, in Halide Edip Adıvar’s words.

Ulviye’nin Hayali (turkish)

Ulviye’nin Hayali; Kurtuluş Savaşı ve Cumhuriyet Dönemi’nde önemli bir yere sahip olan, iz bırakmış ancak hiçbir zaman yeterince hatırlanmamış kadınlardan ilham alınarak hazırlanacak bir fotoğraf serisidir.

Ulviye Mevlan; Osmanlı Kadın Hareketi'nin önemli kişilerinden biridir. İlk kadın dergilerinden biri olan "Kadınlar Dünyası" isimli derginin editörüydü. Birçok kız okulu ve kadınları çalışması için terzi atölyeleri açılmasını sağladı. İsmi, yüce, güçlü, üstün anlamına gelmektedir.

Bu seride tarihi ambiyans tekrar yaratılacak. Ancak kadınlar modernize edilmiş bir görünüme sahip olacaklar. Bu görünüm 1910’lar, 1920’ler ve 1930’ların izlerini de taşıyacak. Bu sayede geçmiş ile gelecek arasında bir köprü kurulacak ve Türk kadınına, hem kendi geçmişini hem de geleceğini hatırlatarak ona ilham ve güç kaynağı olmasını sağlayacak bir proje oluşturulacak.

Türkiye’de kadın adına yapılan yaratıcı ve sanatsal projeler neredeyse yok denilecek derecede az; özellikle kadın şiddetinin arttığı, kadın haklarında geriye gidilen bu dönemde, bu tarz “pozitif etki” yaratması gereken bir çalışma yapmam gerektiğini düşündüm. Çünkü daima çizilen zayıf kadın imajının aksine, "Türk kadını" 100 yıl önce büyük bir zinciri kırmış; zeki, güçlü ve cesur bir kadındır. Bugün Türk kadınının, gerçek geçmişini öğrenmesi ve hatırlaması, bugününü sorgulaması gerekmekte.  Halide Edip Adıvar'ın dediği gibi, "Türkiye'deki gericilik her zaman kadının kazandığı özgürlüğe saldırmakla başlar.".

No one is innocent adresses the youth who's stuck between the alternative movement, which spread and became popular at the start of 2000s, and the Turkish social structure and cultural tradition. The fiction takes the audiance to several locations, foremost Taksim. Through this trip, it takes snippets of a punk groups life with the purpose of showing the punk culture, the punk youth's and the Turkish people's perspectives.

The project started with the focus of fashion and visuality but in time it transformed into a scenario touching several subjects, increasing its depth. The actors are cosplayers with no professional training. Cosplay, short for costume play, is a performance art where the performers make impressions of imaginary characters (anime, manga, movies, games, books or generic characters created by the performer) by using various accesories and costumes.
All the designs belong to the performers.

After I heard snowing in Istanbul, I called Grinningsun to make shooting. I really like photomanipulation but nothing can be great like real snow! So we woke up morning, prepared and went to Çamlıca which is the highest hill in Istanbul. Grinningsun wore her thin kimono and showed me her thin babets and I said "you can't take these shoes off!!"  Thats why I edited shoes on some photographs. People said it will be less snowing today but when we were starting to shooting snow storm starts! It was the hardest shooting in my life with cold, wind and snow.

 

We went to Hidiv Palace after shoot car captor sakura. The worst weather welcomes us at there. Snowflakes were sticking to lenses and because of cold lens started to be misty and my hot breath blocks viewfinder.There was 20-30 cm snow on the ground and it was hard to walk and shoot at the same time. I took a blanket to top of my head but well it didn't work really well   bu but it was awesome atmosphere, Grinningsun's performance was just gorgeous.

 

Mists on lenses, made really great "natural" effects on photographs. I couldn't realise some wrong concept elements while shooting like bins, lamps because of heavy snow. I deleted this with photoshop. The another hard thing is settings of white balance in snow shooting. How shot in too dark is hard, shot in too bright is hard too. If you can't make true setting, you will have too white and less black photographs, details lost. Colors are going to somewhere else too You can see all of these at histogram. Less colors and black... JUST WHITE! Even shutter speed doesn't really work on this so you have to make a color correction and fix raw.  Grinningsun made an awesome make-up so I skiped edit her face but her skin was so red because of cold I just edit her skin color.


Shooting at this day was bad or not? I don't know but I like results so much.
We didn't got a flue, had great photographs well I really wanted to make some manipulations on these photographs but then I thought maybe keep them with natural will be better What are you thinking? Should I make it more fantasy?



Kar yağışını duyar duymaz Elif ile çekim planları yapmayı başladık. Her ne kadar fotoğraf manipülasyonunu çok sevsem de hiçbir şey gerçek bir kardan daha iyi olamaz. Sabah erkenden kalkıp hazırlandık ve soluğu Çamlıca'da aldık. Elif incecik kimonosuyla bana ince babetlerini gösterdi, direk "o botlar ayağından çıkmıyor" dedim ve olası bir zatüre'yi engelledim. Fotoğraflar da ayakkabıları ile bu yüzden biraz oynadım. Hava durumuna göre o gün "normal" bir kar yağışı olacaktı ancak çekime başlarken uzaktan bir kar fırtınasının geldiğini gördük. Soğuk, rüzgar ve kar üçlüsü tam anlamıyla şu ana kadar deneyimlediğim en zor çekime neden oldu.

card captor sakura'nın çekimlerinden sonra hidiv kasrına shirahime syo'yu çekmeye gittik. Karlar lense yapışıp durdu. Soğuktan hem lensin önü, hem de benim nefesimin viewfinder'a gelmesi ile hep buğulandı.Yerde 20-30 cm kar olduğundan bata çıka haraket etmek zorunda kaldım.Son çare Üstüme bir örtü aldım ama hiçbir işe yaramadı.Ama ama.. o muhteşem atmosferde Elif tam anlamıyla %100 bir performans sergiledi. Çektikçe "ohaa ohaaa harikaaa" diyip durdum.Çekimi bitirdiğimizde lendimizi zar zor arabaya attık ve çıkarkan yollar sadece beyazken 20 cm kadar kar oluşmuştu.



Lensin buğulanması fotoğraflarda hoş "doğal" efektlere yol açmış. Ancak yoğun kardan farkedemediğim sonra pc ekranında görebildiğim lambalar, çöp kutuları gibi pek konsepte uymayan öğeleri silmek gerekti. Karda çekim yapmanın bir diğer zorluğu ise ışık ayarı. Nasıl çok karanlıkta çekmek zorsa çok aydınlıkta da çekmek zor. Doğru bir ayar yapmazsanız beyazı fazla patlamış siyahı az fotoğraflarınız oluyor.Detaylar kayboluyor.
Bir diğer kar fotoğrafında ki zorluk ise renk olmaması. Histogramdan da çok net gözüktüğü gibi ne kadar yüksek shutter'la çekerseniz çekiz beyazdan geçilmiyor ve mecburi bir renk ayarlamasına gidiliyor. Elif harika bir makyaj yaptığından dolayı bana pek bir iş bırakmadı.Ancak soğuktan hep teni kızarmıştı bu yüzden ten tonlamasına gitmek zorunda kaldım.


 

O gün çekmek iyi miydi kötü müydü bilmiyorum ama sonuçtan ben kesinlikle memnunum.
Hasta olmadık, ekipmana birşey olmadı ve harika fotoğraflarımız oldu. Aslından içten içe bu fotoğraflarla daha da uç manipülasyonlar yapmak istiyorum ama sanırım o doğal haliyle bir göstermek daha iyi olacaktır.

This is my new the biggest project calling "The Melancholy Of Porcelain Spirits"
I worked on this about 3 months. We made shooting about 2 days in santralistanbul. It has really great steampunk atmosphere and I always want to make movie and photography series at there.

So my dear cosplayer friends made original cosplay designs for that work. I directed the video and wrote the scenario. It is about the professor who had obsession to make real human girl. If you want to see more about the story and photography series check out these links.
